How to free some GB in your Apple OS X

You just bought a MacBook Air or you’ve just invested $$$ on a SSD. You’ll find that every byte of storage is now important. Few things can be done to get some storage space back.

I do suggest to do a Time Machine back up before deleting stuff…just in case you change your mind later on.

Where can you get some extra space from?

If like me you speak only few different languages, you might not be aware of but your OSX has lots of languages installed…including believe it or not Klingon the language of some strange looking fellows from Star Trek.

klingons, star trek

Assuming you haven’t seen any Klingons around and you are not interested in learning Bislama, Afrikaans or Assamese to mention a few….you could use a free application called MONOLINGUAL to free well over a Gb of storage. This nice utility can be downloaded HERE.

Once you’ve done with that you could free more space, about 3/4 Gb, by deleting the Printers Folder.

• If you are not using a printer you could remove the whole Printers folder or the support folders for printers you don’t own. You have an HP for example and you don’t need Canon or Xeros support.

Navigate to:  Macintosh HD/Library/Printers/

and remove either the whole Printers folder or the ones you are not needing. Remember to back up before you delete.

Another thing you should do is to keep your media files on an external HD (your music and photos). A tutorial HERE

Before importing your music, connect an external HD, launch iTunes while holding down the option key and direct iTunes to the library on the external when prompted. Same method you can use with iPhoto.

Now you can enjoy your reclaimed space.
