Detect early signs of skin cancer with iPhone app: MelApp

Aussies, read on: there is a new app for Apple‘s iPhone users that can help you evaluate your mole or freckles and tell you if there is a risk of cancer.melapp-1

Melanoma is a bad beast, not just because it killed Bob Marley, because it kills around 50K people a year worldwide.

MelApp will evaluate your worrisome spot using image-based pattern recognition technology based on a database of information licensed from the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center. The app uses the standard ABCDE (Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter and Evolution) assessment to detect early signs of melanoma.

All you need to do is to capture an image of your freckle or mole and upload it for analysis. After the process is concluded, you’ll get a risk assessment summary with the likelihood that the freckle or mole is cancerous.

MelApp can also keep track over time of a mole or freckle, to see if any changes that could indicate a melanoma, are detected.

melapp-2Do not think that with MelApp you can than forget about physicians! The app is meant as a quick and handy way to check your skin’s condition.

The app was recently introduced in the App Store and it sells for $1.99.
