Apple may soon be releasing an update to Mac OS X Snow Leopard in order to support iCloud.
A MacRumors’ reader sent the website a screenshot of the yet to be released 10.6.9 Snow Leopard that will make the OS X compatible with Apple’s upcoming iCloud service. The reader found the following notice in his OS X Tiger preference pane, after upgrading his MobileMe account to iCloud.
iCloud, the ‘cloud’ based service for syncing, streaming and sharing iTunes content over multiple platforms, has been so far tested with developers using OS X Lion, and it appears that with the next OS X Lion upgrade 10.7.2, iCloud will finally become public.
It will probably be in coincidence with this release that Apple will seed the 10.6.9 for Snow Leopard users.
Apple’s promotional page for iCloud, states that some of the syncing service features, will require OS X Lion:
Some features of iCloud require iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2, or a Mac computer with OS X Lion or a PC with Windows Vista or Windows 7 (Outlook 2007 or 2010 recommended).
Although some of the features like Mac Dashboard widgets, Dock items, System Preferences and keychains, are not going to be available to non Lion users, it seems that with this upcoming software update, Apple will grant Snow Leopard users’ some of the basic iCloud functionalities.
