OS X Lion change grey icons in Finder with old colourful ones

Tips & Tricks

Here’s a little trick for those running OS X Lion: Apple‘s new icons in its latest OS are visually less exciting than what we had in Snow Leopard.

The new monochromatic grey and white can fortunately be changed with a free download and a simple Terminal command string.

First of all you need to download and install SIMBL that you can get from here.icon-finder

Once you’ve done that download and install the ColourfulSidebar SIMBL plugin and this will put some color back into the icons. But to make that effective, you need to open your Terminal (Applications > Utilities), paste the following string and hit return.

~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/

Now, for the changes to be effective, you need to kill the Finder. Once again in the Terminal paste the following and hit return.

killall Finder

This is it…now your sidebar icons in Lion are colorful again!
