This week at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, a new digital sheet music app and store for the Apple iPad was introduced: Tonara. The app not only displays sheet music, but as users play, it listens, then turns the pages automatically as the song plays. Additionally, it records performances, enabling users to review and share their performances with others. From the Tonara website:
With Tonara, playing music becomes a fun, cool and interactive experience.
Tonara enables you to download digital sheet music to your iPad, and is the first interactive sheet music app which listens to you playing and follows along by itself, whatever speed you play at. It indicates your current position on the score and turns the pages for you automatically. You can also record your performances and share with your friends. So whether you enjoy playing classical or popular music, the Tonara app will change the way you play music!
Other sheet music apps are passive – that is, they only display sheet music pages, requiring the user to pause playing in order to turn sheet music pages. Tonara, on the other hand, is listening while you’re playing. It knows exactly where you are in the score, visually indicates it for you, then turns the page automatically when it’s time.
Working with any acoustic or electronic instrument, Tonara store presently includes pieces for piano, violin, celllo and flute. As the user base grows, Tonara says they have plans to support additional instruments. They also say they are in talks with different music publishers in regards to licensing content, and hope to soon be able to offer more songs for purchase.
Tonara is free on the App Store and you can buy additional songs for $0.99 via in-app iTunes purchase.
