Gaming on your iPad or iPod touch soon could be very different…at least for Big Fish Games to begin with.

Apple has allowed the game maker to offer subscription-based games.

You know how it works with iOS games: you pay for a single game, you download, you play.
Big Fish will soon release an app that will grant unlimited access to all of its games, similar to the subscription service that Netflix‘s iPad app offers.

The subscription for the initial release will be $4.99 a month that will climb to $6.99 a month once more titles will be added. There will also be a free version for those who want to check out the new service before committing. The free version will have ads and you’ll be limited to 30-minutes of gaming per day.

According to Paul Thelen, Big Fish’s founder, the app has been designed in such a way that will be easily adaptable to internet-connected TVs and to Android devices. The Android version of the app will only be available in 2012.

An interesting fact: Big Fish, founded in 2002, generated $140 million in sales last year, mostly from games downloaded to a personal computer or mobile device. About 75 percent of its players are women over the age of 30, Thelen said.
