What’s worse than losing or having your iDevice stolen? Not being able to recover it!
Prey is one of my favorite apps for Mac OS X and the company has recently released their track and recover app for iOS devices.
This is how it works: once installed you need to register your device on the Prey server. If you already have a MacBook registered, you can use the same account to add the iPhone.
The app is pretty neat and it is cleverly implemented onto your iPhone.
Let’s assume now that your iPhone has been stolen. You go to the Prey website and report the iPhone as stolen.
Prey will send your device a notification that says “slide the lock to set up your new PIN number“. When the thief slides the slider, a picture of him will be taken with the GPS location and available to you only.
Also, when you mark your phone stolen, prey will change the boot screen of the app to make it look like a game and not an anti-theft app.
According to the developer there are a couple of bugs that are currently being investigated. The main one being an issue with the GPS icon that stays in your location bar, even when you’ve closed it.
All in all a good, and free, app that you should have installed on your precious device….and hopefully never have to use it!
The app is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad.
Prey is available from the iTunes App Store
