Tuesday it’s been a big day for the jailbreaking community that saw the release of redsn0w 0.9.10b2 that can finally jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 in untethered mode. We have a step by step tutorial here.
Few hours after the Chronic Dev team released also PwnageTool 5.0.1, also for untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.0.1 on all Apple handsets except for iPhone 4S and iPad 2.
What is the difference between redsn0w and PwnageTool?
The latter only works on Mac computers and creates a custom jailbroken iOS 5.0.1 that you use to restore the device, while redsn0w jailbreaks the iOS already installed on your device.
redsn0w is a lot easier to use and ideal for novices. PwnageTool can preserve your baseband: if you still have an iPhone with iOS 4 and you want to unlock it using Ultrasn0w, you cannot upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 baseband because it is not unlockable via Ultrasn0w, unless you preserve your baseband before upgrading.
How to jailbreak untethered iOS 5.0.1 and preserving the baseband
- Download PwnageTool 5.0.1 (Mac only)
- Download iOS 5.0.1 for your device
- Select your device and click Next
- Select Expert mode, hit Browse and point it to the downloaded IPSW
- Click on the Build button and PwnageTool will now start building your custom firmware.
- Depending on the speed of your computer, it will take a few minutes to create the custom IPSW
- Plug in your device to your computer, power it off and follow the onscreen instructions to put the device in DFU mode
- In iTunes, hold the Option (alt) key and click Restore
- Point to the newly created and jailbroken iOS 5.0.1
Done!
Now you can unlock using Ultrasn0w and you can also install cracked apps following this tutorial.
