The recently leaked purported iPad 3 shell, reveals that Apple will not add a much-needed USB port to its popular tablet –bummer– forcing users that want to move files among machines or adding extra storage, to look at alternative ways.
Although Apple offers with its iCloud service a way to store stuff in the clouds, it’s just more convenient, and possibly safer, to manage your own documents and media.
To our help comes the AirStash, a regular flash drive compatible with Mac and Pc, that can stream and transfer files to iPad or iPhone (as well as many other Android devices) without using a USB port.
The gadget has a built-in Wi-Fi that uses for its file transfer, or video streaming, to multiple devices simultaneously.
The AirStash looks like a conventional USB stick, except a bit wider than normal. At the bottom of it there’s a removable SD memory card that can be swapped with others…in case you wan to have a card for your pictures, one for movies and another with personal stuff.
The gadget has been designed for iPad and iPhone and its manufacturer, Wearable Inc., provides a free app to easily manage and view the files on the drive.
AllThingsD tested the device and the seems very impressed with its performance: they’ve stored three movies on the AirStash and streamed them to three different devices, simultaneously…from 75 feet away…and it performed flawlessly.
To power its Wi-Fi the AirStash has a battery the should last up to seven hours, that can be recharged via USB.
The AirStash is and comes in two configuration, 8GB for $150 and the 16GB is going for $180.
