If you are fanatical about clean, free and simple Desktop on your Mac, there is a new free utility that can help you with that. 
HiddenMe lets you hide all your Desktop icons with the click of a button.
After installing the free utility, a new icon is added to your Menu Bar. Click the icon and click on Hide Desktop Icons to see the magic happening. And when you want them all back, click on Show Desktop Icons.
The freeware is available from this link and is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.6 or higher.
