Free Applications

CCleaner, a very popular system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool for Windows users, has been recently introduced in the Mac App Store.

The free utility removes unused and obsolete files from your system, allowing your Mac to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. CCleaner can also clean traces of your online activities, tracking cookies and a multitude of debris that can clutter your Mac.

Its UI is really simple and dumb-proof. On the left hand-side you have three different options: Cleaner, Tools and Options.ccleaner

Cleaner can analyze and remove unnecessary files from your Safari browser (as well as Firefox and Chrome in the Applications tab), your System files and Applications. You can decide to exclude some items by unchecking the box next to it.ccleaner

Tools can be used to uninstall applications, to repair the Disk Permissions and to erase free disk space.

In Options you can decide the cookies that you don’t want to be deleted.

I’ve only tested the app a couple of times since it was only released on Monday, and it feels solid, responsive, I didn’t encounter any bug and it seems to be doing a good cleaning job!

This doesn’t come to me as a surprise: since its release in 2004, the Windows version has been used by millions of computer owners and is very highly rated.

I think I may have found a substitute for OnyX!
