How to automatically start or stop your Mac at a set time

Tips & Tricks

Did you know that your Mac can be automatically turned on and off at a set time? Let’s say you get to work every day at 9am, you can set your computer to boot few minutes before your arrive, so that the machine is ready to work when you get in. Or if you are seeding some torrent files and you want to power off your Mac after a few hours of seeding, you can easily set it up.

This works both with Snow Leopard and Lion.

- Launch your System Preferences and click on Energy Saver

- Click the Schedule… button at the bottom right side

- Select the Start up or Wake and select from the drop down window the time interval you want as well as the time of the day.

- Select the lower box for sleeping, restart, or shutdown.

Hit OK and you are good to go.

Interesting. But unless you have autologin set (bit of a security risk), your mac is just going to sit there at the login screen and not do anything useful. And with all the previously open applications and windows that Lion re-opens on bootup, it’s the post-login sequence that takes up time, not the time from switching on to the login screen. Still, must play around with this and see how it can be put to use, thanks.
