Bathroom Geek Confessions! Could be a great title for a study showing owners of tablets are confessing to taking their devices into the bathroom to play games, watch videos, or just surf or read an ebook while on the toilet or relaxing in the tub.
Interested in how consumers are using tablets, Staples, the office-supply retailer, decided to take a poll from a group of tablet users in June 2011. The goal was to find out typical patterns in personal and business related daily use of tablet PCs. Thirty-five percent of the tablet owners polled confessed bringing their iPads into the bathroom. Thirty percent bring their iPads into restaurants and Seventy-eight percent all users polled take their tablets to bed with them. Sixty percent of tablet owners take their device on vacation to check up with work and catch up on email.
Seventy-five percent of tablet owners use their thin mobile computers for email, but just a third use them to edit documents. Sixty percent, however, claim that productivity increases when they use a tablet. Forty percent of tablet users bought the device for keeping up with communication in and out of the office place, but 90 percent of all polled claimed the portability of a tablet was the primary motivator for their purchasing decision of the expensive device. Over eighty percent of the survey takers say that the tablet has improved the balance between their home and work life. As for data security, over two-thirds of tablet owners admit not bothering to back up data from their devices, while only fifteen percent use anti-virus software on them.
Staple’s study corresponds to another recent survey that found nearly twenty percent of people wind up losing their smartphone to a watery death in the toilet, due to the fact forty percent of smartphone owners take their device into the bathroom to surf the Web, do email or use other various mobile apps. If you were lucky enough to get your hands on one of the recent fire sale priced $99 HP TouchPads, you’re not out too much. On the other hand, replacing most any other tablet is going to run you anywhere form $400 to $700.
All in all, it’s obvious from the poll taking your iPhone or iPad to the bathroom must be a ‘moving experience’! Yes, pun intended. And yes, we realize two-thirds of pun is ‘PU’!
