VR Zone reports that Apple could introduce in its future Macs the USB 3.0 port alongside the high-speed Thunderbolt.
Apple’s decision could be dictated by the cheap $2-3 apiece that the USB 3.0 sells for when bought in bulk, compared to $10-15 for the Intel-created Thunderbolt.
Despite many commentators putting the two as competing technologies, Intel is allegedly planning to build USB 3.0 support, in the near future, into its hardware.
Due to the affordable price and to the fact that USB 3.0 is backwards-compatible, it’s pretty obvious why Apple is planning to build in this fairly new technology and replace the USB 2.0.
The other relevant factor is that Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals are pricier than USB 3.0-compatible peripherals and despite the clear edge that the Thunderbolt has over the USB 3.0 when it come to data transfer speed, Apple’s move can only be seen as a clever upgrade.
